The Iranian national team is on the verge of securing an early spot in the 2026 World Cup after today’s round of Asian qualifiers, with just one condition.

Iran only needs a draw in their match against Uzbekistan at Azadi Stadium in Tehran tonight to join Japan in securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Iran currently leads Uzbekistan by 3 points in Group A and holds a 9-point advantage over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with three matches remaining. Therefore, a draw would be enough for the West Asian team to qualify for the World Cup finals for the fourth consecutive time.

So far, Iran has won 6 out of 7 matches, with their only dropped points being a goalless draw against Uzbekistan in the first leg. They have secured four one-goal-margin victories against Kyrgyzstan (twice), North Korea, and the UAE.

Iran Could Secure a 2026 World Cup Spot in Today’s Match Against Uzbekistan

In Group B, South Korea could also move closer to securing a World Cup berth if they defeat Jordan. After a disappointing home draw against Oman, they are only three points ahead of both Oman and Iraq. Therefore, if they beat Jordan, the gap between the two teams will be 6 points, with just two matches left.

However, things could become complicated if Hong Myung-bo’s squad loses to Jordan, which would cost them the top spot and allow Iraq to catch up in points. The two teams will meet in Suwon for a rematch of last year's Asian Cup semifinal.

In Group C, aside from Japan, which has already secured qualification, the race remains open for Australia (10 points), Saudi Arabia (9 points), and Indonesia, Bahrain, and China (all with 6 points).

The top two teams from each of the three groups in the third round of Asian qualifiers will qualify directly for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will advance to the fourth qualifying round in October.
