Spain — Forward Son Heung-min declared himself a legend after helping Tottenham defeat Man Utd 1-0 in the Europa League final, ending a 17-year trophy drought.

At the beginning of the season, Son Heung-min expressed his desire to become a Tottenham legend, though he didn’t feel worthy of the title yet. But after the victory at San Mamés yesterday, the Korean striker changed his mind. “Call me a legend. Why not? Just for today!” he told TNT Sports.

Tottenham won the match thanks to a lone goal from Brennan Johnson in the 42nd minute. With that, the “Spurs” ended their title drought since the 2008 League Cup and claimed their first European title since the 1984 UEFA Cup.

It also marked the first club-level title of Son’s career. Prior to this, he had only won a gold medal in men’s football with South Korea at the 2018 Asian Games. After the final whistle, he celebrated passionately with teammates, draped himself in the South Korean flag, and greeted fans in the stands.

“It’s been 17 years since anyone at the club did this. But today is that day, with these amazing players,” Son shared. “Maybe today I’ll say I’m a club legend. This is something I’ve always dreamed of, and today it became a reality. I’m very happy. I’m the happiest man in the world.”

After the match, Tottenham players received medals from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin. However, when it was Son’s turn along with Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur, UEFA had run out of medals. Meanwhile, eight match officials had received theirs. According to The Sun, Ceferin exchanged words with Son — likely both congratulating and apologizing — before handing over the trophy.

But the 32-year-old striker wasn’t bothered by the incident and looked forward to returning to London to celebrate with fans. “For the past seven days, I’ve been dreaming of this final every day,” Son said. “I’ve finally achieved my goal, I can sleep well and enjoy it. Today is a day for celebration, so let’s make it a day we’ll never forget — and maybe I’ll even miss my flight tomorrow.”
