Man Utd fans vent their anger on Onana
Spain — Man Utd fans consider Andre Onana the worst goalkeeper in history, after their team lost 0-1 to Tottenham in the Europa League final on the night of May 21.
In the 42nd minute, after a left-wing cross from Pape Sarr, the ball deflected off Brennan Johnson and Luke Shaw, then awkwardly bounced over the goal line. Andre Onana was close to the ball but failed to make the save.
Many Man Utd fans vented their anger at the Cameroonian goalkeeper on social media. Comments like "Onana is terrible," "The worst goalkeeper in football history," "That was a goalkeeper's error," "Onana keeps making mistakes day after day," and "No exaggeration—at the highest level, I've never seen a goalkeeper as bad as Onana" were widely shared and liked on X.
One fan criticized Onana for lacking a basic trait of a goalkeeper: strong hands. "In that situation, PSG’s Donnarumma would have made the save," they wrote.
Many Man Utd supporters also criticized Luke Shaw — the defender who touched the ball but failed to clear it. Most felt the English player performed poorly and should leave Old Trafford along with Onana.
Back in April, during Man Utd’s quarterfinal match against Lyon, former player Nemanja Matic called Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.” Statistics company Opta also confirmed that the former Inter star had the worst clean sheet rate and the second-worst save rate among all Man Utd goalkeepers who played over 900 minutes since the 2003–2004 season.
In the May 21 final, Man Utd dominated possession (73%), had 16 shots, and hit the target six times but failed to capitalize. In contrast, Tottenham only needed three shots and one on target to score the winning goal.
Tottenham claimed their first title since the League Cup in 2008. The “Spurs” also secured their fourth European trophy, following the old Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962–1963, and UEFA Cups in 1971–1972 and 1983–1984. More importantly, as Europa League champions, Tottenham qualified for next season’s Champions League.
In contrast to Tottenham’s glory, Man Utd finished the 2024–2025 season empty-handed. In addition to losing the Europa League final, the “Red Devils” were eliminated in the fifth round of the FA Cup and the quarterfinals of the League Cup. On May 25, if they lose to Aston Villa, Man Utd could drop to 17th in the Premier League standings.
The Europa League final also marked Man Utd’s fourth straight loss to Tottenham this season, following 0-3 and 0-1 defeats in the Premier League and a 3-4 loss in the League Cup quarterfinals.
